Make the dollars make sense: what do doors cost?

Once you’ve decided to move forward with a new garage door package, you’ll want to make sure that you’re choosing the best options to fit your budget and serve your home or business appropriately. This project is not only meant to make your property more aesthetically pleasing, but it’s also an investment; selecting the right door(s), materials, and features can help safeguard your property, lower energy bills, and overall save you more money in future adjustments and repairs. Whitaker’s Garage Door Store is here to help you consider all your options and what they could cost before you work with us, so you can be prepared with a vision and a price range in mind.

In 2024, The national average for price for garage doors $1,200. Let’s start by exploring some popular door types and what they cost. Standard panel doors are what you’ll see on many suburban residences here in Westchester; they feature horizontal panels that move up in sections along tracks mounted to the ceiling, and their average cost is about $550. Tilt-up doors are one solid panel which lifts upward from the floor and slides into a section atop the garage (partially retractable tilt-up doors are also known as “awning doors”). This variant can cost around $850. Carriage doors are becoming more and more popular than ever; these side-hinged doors are an older design, reminiscent of classic carriage house doors. Originally, you would see these doors in wood, although they are available now in a plethora of materials. For this fairy-tale style, you’ll likely start at about $5,500. Another style gaining popularity these days is retractable doors, (think “barn doors”). Retractable doors can be mounted inside or outside of the garage wall and will move aside horizontally. Important to note, however, is that these can rarely be operated automatically— although they generally look stunning and are very sturdy. These doors typically start at $2,850.

One factor relating to variations in price will be the size of your door(s). In general, you’ll be considering a one, two, or three-car garage door. For two-car options, you can purchase a single double door, or two separate doors (note that choosing double doors typically saves money). Three-car varieties can be a single door in addition to one double door, or three separate doors, depending on the look you’re aiming for. A one-car garage will average about $500-$2,500. Two-car packages range from $750-$4,700 and three-cars will average $1,300-$7,000.

Finally, let’s talk materials! Personally, we at Whitaker’s Garage Door Store love the appearance of wood, but there are myriad choices to pick from these days- and we can make anything work to your advantage! If you are indeed leaning toward wood, bear in mind that genuine wood is gorgeous, but requires a lot of care and upkeep, as it is heavily impacted by weather. However, if you’re looking for that farmhouse, reclaimed, original-to-the-property look, real wood is just the ticket! Talk about curb appeal- we work with the finest wood types, including mahogany, sapele, western red cedar, knotty cedar, pine, ash, and white oak. They can be stained to your liking, and we can discuss other design options as well. If you don’t love the idea of maintaining real wood, faux wood is also a common and sturdy option- although it is the most expensive ($950–$4,100). Aluminum, ($700–$2,100) fiberglass, ($1,000–$2,100) vinyl ($1,000–$2,600) and steel are also very common and well-loved among customers; the cheapest options being steel ($600–$2,000) and aluminum (they’re easy to maintain— and work in a variety of climates).

Overall, we can assure you that we are prepared to work within any budget. We can’t stress enough how much we value your happiness over anything.
